How to Punch Above Your Weight: Using Behavioral Science to Elevate Your Leadership Presence

I remember sitting in a high-rise office in Midtown Manhattan, looking at a candidate’s resume that, on paper, shouldn't have stood a chance.

The role was a C-suite position at a global finance firm. The candidate was "under-qualified" by at least five years of experience. But when they walked into the room, something shifted. It wasn't just confidence: it was a specific, palpable presence that commanded the space before they even spoke a word.

As a former executive recruiter in New York City, I saw this happen time and time again.

Some people just know how to "punch above their weight." They land the roles they aren't "ready" for. They lead teams through crises with a calm that feels infectious. They influence stakeholders who are technically more senior than they are.

For years, people called this "executive presence" and treated it like a mysterious, innate gift. You either had it, or you didn't.

The truth is, they were wrong.

Leadership presence isn't a personality trait. It’s a set of observable, repeatable behaviors. And when you look at it through the lens of behavioral science, it becomes something you can actually build, measure, and master.

The Myth of Charisma

We’ve been told that to lead, we need to be the loudest person in the room or possess a sparkling, extroverted charm.

Let’s be real: some of the most effective leaders I’ve ever coached are introverts who value deep listening over grandstanding.

The problem is that most professionals wait until they feel like a leader before they start acting like one. They wait for the title, the "years of experience," or the permission from someone else to finally speak up.

In my book, You Bring You: Leverage Your Strengths for Career Success, I talk about the importance of showing up as your whole self. But showing up isn't just about physical presence; it’s about the behavioral signals you send to the world.

If you’re waiting to feel "ready," you’re already behind.

The Soar Method™: Presence as a Science

When I founded Soar Executive Coaching, I wanted to move away from vague advice and move toward results-driven frameworks. That’s how The Soar Method™ was born.

Grounded in behavioral science and aligned with ICF standards, this method treats leadership as a practice of intentional behavior.

If we want to elevate your presence, we don't focus on "being more confident." We focus on how you show up in a "pivotal moment."

A pivotal moment isn't just a board meeting. It’s the two minutes before a difficult feedback session. It’s how you react when a project hits a wall. It’s the way you rethink success when the metrics aren't in your favor.

Behavioral science tells us that our environment and our habits shape our outcomes. To punch above your weight, you have to rewire the "signals" you send.

The Three Pillars of Behavioral Presence

To elevate your leadership presence immediately, you need to shift your focus from inner feeling to outer impact. Here is the framework I use with my executive clients to help them bridge that gap.

1. Clarity Under Pressure

Presence is often defined by how you handle the "messy middle." When stakes are high and information is low, do you speak to perform, or do you speak to clarify?

Leaders who punch above their weight are "signal-senders." They cut through the noise. Instead of using corporate jargon to hide uncertainty, they use direct, brave communication.

The Shift: Stop trying to have all the answers. Start asking the questions that no one else is brave enough to ask.

2. Warm Assertiveness

There is a sweet spot between being a "steamroller" and a "doormat." Behavioral science refers to this as warm assertiveness.

It’s the ability to be deeply empathetic while remaining incredibly clear about expectations. If you are too "warm" without the "assertive," people like you but don't follow you. If you are too "assertive" without the "warm," people comply but don't commit.

The Script: "I hear your concerns about the timeline, and I appreciate the hard work. However, we need to hit this milestone by Friday to stay on track. How can I support you in making that happen?"

3. Predictable Performance

Trust isn't built on one-off heroics. It’s built on the "predictability" of your behavior.

In my NYC recruiting days, the candidates who landed the biggest roles weren't the ones who had one great interview. They were the ones who were consistent in every touchpoint: from the first email to the final negotiation. They mastered the art of self-promotion by letting their consistency speak for them.

Start, Stop, Continue: Your Presence Audit

I’m a big believer in making complex concepts manageable. If you want to start punching above your weight this week, run your recent interactions through this simple audit:

  • STOP: Watering down your message. Avoid "uptalk" (ending sentences like questions) and "filler" phrases like "I just wanted to check in" or "Does that make sense?" These are status-lowering behaviors.

  • START: Practicing the "Power Pause." Before responding to a challenging question, wait three seconds. It signals that you are thinking, not reacting. It’s a high-status behavior that creates immediate gravity.

  • CONTINUE: Leveraging your unique strengths. Don't try to be a carbon copy of the leader you admire. If your strength is data, lead with clarity. If it’s empathy, lead with connection. Your presence is strongest when it is authentic.

Why This Matters Now

We are living in an era of rapid change, where AI and shifting work cultures are redefining what it means to lead.

Technical skills are the baseline. But your ability to navigate human complexity: to lead with vision, build trust, and inspire action: is what will differentiate you.

Clear is kind. Being direct about your goals and your value isn't aggressive; it’s an investment in your future and the culture of your organization.

I get it: it can feel risky to "lean in" when you don't feel 100% ready. But the most pivotal moments in your career will always happen right outside your comfort zone.

Are you ready to stop playing small?
